The brief for the greenhouse project called for a building with three functions:
1. House the expanded permanent indoor collection of a college's botanic gardens
2. Consolidate the faculty offices and classrooms of its Environmental Studies department, along with a new institute for sustainability and the environment
3. "Serve as an iconic piece of architecture, whose physical presence embodies [the college's] institutional commitment to preparing its students to address critical environmental issues of our time"

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/campus map_900.png" width="900" height="651" width_o="900" height_o="651" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/campus map_o.png" data-mid="26113076"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/science center strip_900.png" width="900" height="85" width_o="900" height_o="85" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/science center strip_o.png" data-mid="26113088"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
A quick examination of the history of construction on the campus reveals a tendency towards agglomeration, especially around the existing greenhouses. The greenhouses, the first buildings on their hill, are now the smallest part of a large, fascinating building (the Science Center), amassed by several architects in different phases and styles over a century (see campus plan above and photographs below).

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-1.jpg" width="450" height="300" width_o="450" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-1_o.jpg" data-mid="26116309" caption="The differences in brickwork in this relatively straightforward archway reflect the building's agglomerative nature." border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-2.jpg" width="450" height="300" width_o="450" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-2_o.jpg" data-mid="26116311" caption="This interior courtyard is the building's most recent addition." border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-3.jpg" width="450" height="300" width_o="450" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-3_o.jpg" data-mid="26116312" caption="Juxtapositions abound." border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-4.jpg" width="450" height="300" width_o="450" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885384/4_26 photos-4_o.jpg" data-mid="26116314" caption="One of the greenhouses." border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The jarring mishmash of materials, scales, and styles in the building, along with the ambiguity created by interior spaces that had previously been exterior, compels the occupant to confront the Center in a way singular buildings do not.

The new greenhouses amplify that condition. Instead of entirely erasing the existing, dilapidated conservatory, only the glass is removed. The iron framework remains, defining rooms within the new, larger glass enclosure. The new conservatory spills down the hill to meet the road and passes through the Science Center wall into its large (formerly exterior) atrium, further compounding the layers of interiority.

		<description>Proposal with Kristine Ericson, Alison Kung, and Ashley Takacs for OPENGAP's "Inspiration Hotel" competition.

The Arterrain center for artistic production establishes a network of working and living spaces that is embedded in the stimulating environment of New York City, while being elevated above the noise and bustling activity of the street. An electric funicular system--The Artrail--threads through the winding linear structure of the Arterrain center as it bridges the canyon-like streets of the Financial District and rests upon the rooftops of the city. Thus the structure establishes its own paths of movement, independent from the existing grid of streets below, while relying on the mountainous form of the city for support in its ascent. Rooftop sections of the Arterrain serve as outposts for rest and secluded, individual work and study, including studios and living areas that are analogous to the rest stops and camping grounds found along mountain hiking trails. The bridging elements between rooftops are the zones of greatest activity and visibility, with dance rehearsal spaces, galleries, workshops, and group studios--similar to the stretches of active hiking trails between rest stops.

		<description>Proposal with Kristine Ericson, Alison Kung, and Ashley Takacs for the Shop phase of Collage Lab's Post+Capitalist City competition. The brief asked us to re-imagine the shopping experience in a post-capitalist context.

In a typical American grocery store, the diversity of choices within a particular product category may seem absurd and unnecessary. A moderately sized store will display more than twenty types of cranberry juice and fifty brands of breakfast cereal. Loudly colored and diversely shaped packages visually distinguish these products from one another, though their actual contents may be nearly identical.

Many elements of food packages, including slogans, mascots, brand names, and logos, may make certain products seem desirable as objects and not simply as items for consumption. This type of seductive packaging is most common among processed and artificial foods--cereals, sugary drinks, condiments, snack foods, and candy. Meanwhile, the necessary staples of cooking and healthy eating--fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, milk, and cheese--receive little if any packaging. These basic items require minimal labeling to convey their desirability and necessity.

The following proposal addresses a number of questions regarding the relationship between packaging, retail architecture, and product consumption. Capitalist marketing campaigns and branding strategies may convince us that we “need” certain items, but how would shopping habits change if food packages bore no brands or distinctive labels? Would the elimination of varied labels allow consumers to see food products for what they truly contain? If products were not mediated by marketing strategies, would we buy fewer unnecessary things?

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image1_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image1_o.jpg" data-mid="20286380"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image2_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image2_o.jpg" data-mid="20286381"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Our proposal envisions a corporate entity that exercises total control over the display of products in its grocery stores, enforcing the elimination of existing brand labels and introducing a generic labeling system. Uniformly colored and formatted containers forcibly erase the distinctions between previously branded products and display only the basic facts of an item--its name, nutritional information, and ingredients--the bare information required for consumers to decide if a product is necessary to purchase and consume. Such hegemonic control of the means of packaging and displaying products is not in fact so far removed from the current organization of food distributors in America, as only a handful of large corporations control the major brands found in grocery stores. Thus the overwhelming variety that we experience in grocery stores is largely false, as specialized brands are likely owned by massive conglomerates.

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image5_900.jpg" width="900" height="653" width_o="900" height_o="653" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3885474/IB007_image5_o.jpg" data-mid="20286382"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The store’s architecture refers to typical American grocery store configurations, in which the fresh items of produce, meats, baked goods, and dairy products wrap along the perimeter of a store, while non-perishable canned, bottled, and packaged foods fill the remaining interior space. In this proposal, a U-shaped platform serves as the entry to the store, containing the fresh foods that constitute most of the staple elements of a person’s diet, along with essential items such as flour, sugar, and other dry goods.

The interior of the U is sunken below this platform, and from this lower level rises a tower that displays uniformly packaged products. The lowest tier of the tower contains packages within reach of passing customers, while the upper tiers constitute an exposed warehouse.

Displayed along the perimeter faces of the tower, the monochromatic packages visually blend into one another to form a single sculptural mass. Variations in package sizes and geometries generate modulations of light and shadow and a subtle visual texture of positive and negative space. The strict prismatic quality of the tower suggests the artificiality of the processed and preserved foods it contains, while the large mass of the upper warehouse space, normally hidden in stock rooms or off-site storage centers, makes visible the excessiveness of processed grocery items and of the material and labor expended on maintaining the existing grocery store system.

With the stacked products acting as a perforated screen, the warehouse levels offer momentary glimpses of the stocking activities taking place behind. This screen acts similarly to milk and dairy cases in typical grocery stores, which serve as thresholds between the space of the store and the hidden space of the stock room, briefly revealing the usually invisible inner workings of the store’s operation. Thus the tower may be compared to factory and warehouse architecture that puts production and assembly activities on display in order to dramatize these capitalist processes for the consumer, but here the tower emphasizes the excesses of production and large-scale store maintenance.

The packaged products themselves may be seen as building blocks that compose the tower and call attention to the materiality of containers and their often artificial contents. With the space being defined by massive walls of packaging, consumers may be prompted to view these products as substantial objects and potential waste material, which might in turn lead them to become more conscious and wary of the amount of packaged items they buy. By eliminating distinctions between different products, the system visually transforms them into generic “goods” to be accumulated.

		<description>In this gym project, several large program volumes and a complex network of access routes negotiate a small site.

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3884924/charts_900.png" width="900" height="370" width_o="900" height_o="370" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3884924/charts_o.png" data-mid="20282691"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The given program volumes were distributed initially without regard to their required degrees of privacy, but rather according to the frequency with which their users would access them (see "Porosity" diagram above). As a result, the most frequently used spaces are nearest to the ground.

The building's skin separates the general public from gym members, wrapping into and through the building when necessary—public programs are conceptually "outside" the envelope. A public basketball court occupies the largest incursion.

Not only about bodily passage, formal transformation, or implied structural forces, it also incorporates movement in time and space, actualized mechanically—kinetically redefining the fundamental tenets of stasis and permanence. Linked to the operation of the lock gates, the building enables continuous pedestrian passage across the lock when the gate is shut and nautical passage through the lock when the gate is open. Each threshold, when open and functional, prohibits passage through the other.

The Jansen linkage translates rotational motion into a walking motion. The diagram shows how the different spaces enclosed by the mechanism's pieces expand, contract, or stay the same.

The brief specified no program other than space for private occupation and public passage, so the building became a monastery. As its configuration changes with each opening of the gates, rooms become connected and disconnected. The public passage and the unpredictable rate of change of the building provide counterpoints to the regimented, insular life of the monks.

		<description>ROOFSCAPE: ROOFTOP ADDITION TO LINCOLN STRIP MALL

We began the semester with an investigation of roof typologies. From a list of options, I chose to explore geometries of folded plates and thin-shell hyperbolic paraboloids. I developed a basic system for generating either type of geometry from two generative surfaces. The surfaces can be subdivided into any number of segments, and, where the surfaces intersect, the resulting folded plate or hypar unit transitions from concave to convex.

&#60;img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/09_03 diagrams_900.png" width="900" height="560" width_o="900" height_o="560" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/09_03 diagrams_o.png" data-mid="18160146"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/model 02 image 03_900.jpg" width="900" height="560" width_o="900" height_o="560" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/model 02 image 03_o.jpg" data-mid="18160147"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/model 04 image 03_900.jpg" width="900" height="560" width_o="900" height_o="560" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/model 04 image 03_o.jpg" data-mid="18160148"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

No program was specified for the rooftop addition, but instead four economies:
CONSUMPTION   PRODUCTION   EXCHANGE   DISTRIBUTION

The roofscape became oriented around books.

The book is far from dead, but conventional big publishing is on its last legs. A successful modern publishing house is small, adaptable, and works creatively with both paper and digital platforms.

The strip mall and the book share essential qualities. Each are omnipresent, adaptable, and honed to maximum efficiency. Van Dorn Plaza, centrally located and the epitome of the generic strip mall in Lincoln, is well situated to become a hub for everything involved in the production and consumption of literature.
But the efficiency model of the strip mall is contingent upon cheap (yet otherwise costly) international shipping. Under a new model, physical production and consumption are concentrated within the city, while the publishing house can still draw from a worldwide pool of content. Partner houses all over the world can print for their locations, and people are also able to access the content digitally.

The roofscape includes a paper production facility utilizing a combination of recycling and cultivation (on a scale somewhere between industrial capacities and craft papermaking), a small publishing firm, writers’ studio, and bookstore/exchange.

&#60;img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/processes.png" width="600" height="177" width_o="600" height_o="177" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/3513745/processes_o.png" data-mid="20151879" border="0" align="left"/&#62;The programmed space occurs between a new folded plate concrete roof of regular proportions and an upper double-layered folded steel plate roof. The concave concrete units are filled either with additional concrete for the programmed spaces or with soil for planting. Two vacant bays of the strip mall below become access points—one at the bookstore end, the other at the paper processing end.

		<description>The brief for this group project (with Meg Houston and Alison Ingunza) involved the incorporation of organizational concepts developed in a previous exercise into an overall plan for a "tailgate park" adjacent to a college football stadium and downtown entertainment district. The park needed to serve the needs of a large number of tailgaters on football Saturdays, but be versatile enough to be useful during most of the other 355 days of the year.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/507753/09 tailgate adaptation 900n_900.png" width="900" height="378" width_o="900" height_o="378" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/507753/09 tailgate adaptation 900n_o.png" data-mid="14809341"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
We developed a system for variable length parking stalls based on a point to accommodate everything from compact cars to the biggest RVs.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/507753/09 tailgate iterations 900n_900.png" width="900" height="303" width_o="900" height_o="303" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3790/507753/09 tailgate iterations 900n_o.png" data-mid="14809343"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The parking rings were made either convex or concave to provide amphitheater-type spaces. The bowled spaces were equipped with large LED displays to meet another requirement of the brief.

		<description>I worked with two other students in collaboration with members of Min&#124;Day and FACT to produce a preliminary plan for Lincoln’s urban farming group. The block-sized garden consolidates the group's offices and other facilities along with a greenhouse, classrooms, indoor/outdoor market, and leasable space. The garden plots are reconfigurable and scaled to provide spaces for novice gardeners to larger producers. I participated in the schematic design phase and helped produce finalized computer models, drawings, images, and a physical model.
